  • 316/316L Stainless Steel(UNS S31600/UNS S31603)

Grade 316 / 316L | UNS S31600 / UNS S31603 | 1.4401 / 1.4404 These steels are the second most regularly specified stainless steels after Type 304 stainless steel and are part of the SAE defined 300 Series which encompasses a range of austenitic chromium-nickel alloys. Austenitic stainless steels like Type 316L stainless steel is widely available, have good general corrosion resistance, good cryogenic toughness, and excellent formability and weldability. Type 316 stainless steel has 2-3% Molybdenum included in its chemical composition which prevents specific forms of corrosion and generally enhances its corrosion resistance. Type 316 stainless steel is often referred to as “marine grade” stainless due to its increased resistance to chloride corrosion compared to Type 304 stainless steel making it a very suitable material for use in salt water environments. Type 316L stainless steel is a variant of Type 316 stainless steel and differs by having a lower Carbon content as well as slightly lower yield and tensile strengths. Type 316L stainless steel offers improved weldability and also reduces the possibility of lower corrosion resistance around welded areas. As with most steel plate products a number of different designations are used for these  stainless steels. The most common are: Type 316              1.4401 (EN Steel Number)            S31600 (UNS) Type 316L            1.4404 (EN Steel Number)            S31603 (UNS) 316/316L Stainless Steel Properties: Typical chemical and mechanical properties of Type 316 stainless steel and Type 316L stainless steel:  Chemical Analysis (%) PRENMechanical Properties C CrNi Mo Proof Stress Tensile Elongation 316 .08 17 11.5 – 24 255 550-700 40 316L .03 17 11.5 – 24 220520-67040 Typical industrial sectors: Brewing Chemical Industry Dairy Food processing Marine equipment Petrochemicals Pharmaceuticals Typical product applications: Condensers Heat Exchangers Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings Stainless Steel Pipes Pressure Vessels Stainless Steel Valves Stainless Steel Flanges All 316/316L at wilsonpipeline Pipe is certified to 316/316L which we stock at our warehouse in the CN with the capabilities to supply directly to countries across the world in all Stainless Steel Flanges, Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings, and Stainless Steel Pipes. 316/316L Stainless Steel Pipes, Stainless Steel Tubes/Tubing and Butt Weld Stainless Steel Fittings 316/316L stainless steel pipes and stainless steel tubes are available in both seamless and welded form in OD and NB sizes. • Stainless Steel 316 And Stainless Steel 316L Technical Data

Stainless Steel 316 or Stainless Steel 316L is an improved version of stainless steel 304, with the addition of molybdenum and a slightly higher nickel content. The resultant composition of stainless steel 316 gives the steel much increased corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments. The molybdenum makes the steel more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-contaminated media, sea water and acetic acid vapours. The lower rate of general corrosion in mildly corrosive environments gives the steel good atmospheric corrosion resistance in polluted marine atmospheres. stainless steel 316 offers higher strength and better creep resistance at higher temperatures than stainless steel 304.stainless steel 316 also possesses excellent mechanical and corrosion properties at sub-zero temperatures. When there is a danger of corrosion in the heat-affected zones of weldments, the low-carbon variety stainless steel 316L should be used. stainless steel 316 Ti, the titanium-stabilised version, is used for its resistance to sensitization during prolonged exposure in the 550oC-800oC temperature range. Typical Applications Because of its superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, good mechanical properties and fabricability, stainless steel 316 has applications in many sectors of industry. Some of these include:  Tanks and storage vessels for corrosive liquids.  Specialised process equipment in the chemical, food, paper, mining, pharmaceutical and petroleum industries.  Architectural applications in highly corrosive environments. • What is 317L Stainless Steel UNS S31703?

317L Stainless Steel Overview Stainless Steel 317L is a molybdenum bearing, low carbon content “L” grade austenitic stainless steel that provides improved corrosion resistance over 304L and 316L stainless steels. The low carbon provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes. Stainless Steel 317L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of welding. Corrosion Resistance 317L Stainless Steel has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemicals, especially in acidic chloride environments such as those encountered in pulp and paper mills. Increased levels of chromium, nickel and molybdenum compared to 316L stainless steel improve resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion. Resistance increases with molybdenum alloy content.317L Stainless Steel is resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations up to 5 percent at temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C). At temperatures under 100°F (38°C) this alloy has excellent resistance to solutions of higher concentration. However, service tests are recommended to account for the affects of specific operating conditions that may affect corrosion behavior. In processes where condensation of sulfur-bearing gases occurs, 317L Stainless Steel is much more resistant to attack at the point of condensation than conventional alloy 316. The acid concentration has a marked influence on the rate of attack in such environments and should be carefully determined by service tests.
