Stainless Steel 304
Stainless Steel 304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel. Also known as ’18-8′ stainless because of its 18 percent chromium content and 8 percent nickel content, 304 stainless steel has good forming and welding properties, as well as strong corrosion resistance and strength, even at extremely low temperatures.
Stainless Steel 304 has good drawability, can be formed into a variety of shapes and can often be used without annealing, in contrast to type 302 which must be annealed in order to maintain adequate corrosion resistance Common uses for type 304 stainless steel include in the food industry, for brewing, milk processing, wine making, and in pipelines, yeast pans, fermentation vats and storage tanks.
Due to its ability to withstand corrosion by various chemicals found in fruits, meats and milk, it is also found in sinks, tabletops, coffee pots, refrigerators, stoves and various other utensils and cooking appliances. Other areas of use include in architecture, chemical containers, heat exchangers, mining equipment, and in marine stainless steel flanges, stainless steel pipes and stainless steel pipe fittings.
Stainless Steel 304L is an extra-low carbon version of the 304 stainless steel alloy. The lower carbon content in 304L minimizes deleterious carbide precipitation as a result of welding. Consequently, 304L can be used ‘as welded’ in severe corrosion environments and eliminates the need for annealing. However, this grade has slightly lower mechanical properties than the standard 304 grade.
